What is an Anchor Nut?
An Anchor Nut is a heavy-duty, internally threaded fastener drop-forged from ductile iron or cast steel alloy. It features a wide integrated circular base plate (flange) and two or three large protruding wings (ears). The internal threading is designed specifically to match the coarse, fast-threading pitch of high-tensile Mivan or standard Tie Rods (typically 15-17mm or 20-22mm.
Why is it Used?
When liquid concrete is pumped into a column or wall formwork, it exerts extreme hydrostatic lateral pressure. Tie rods are passed through the wall to hold the opposite panels together, and Anchor Nuts are screwed onto both ends of the rods.
The Anchor Nut serves to:
Prevent Formwork Blowouts: It acts as the primary anchor point holding the entire structural framing system together under loads that often exceed 10 to 15 metric tons.
Distribute Concentrated Loads: The wide base plate (flange) spreads the heavy pulling force across a larger surface area of the steel waler channel or wooden beam, preventing the wood or aluminum from crushing.
Enable Tool-Free Speed: The large wings allow workers to tighten or loosen the nut rapidly using a standard hammer on-site.
Classifications & Technical Specifications
Anchor Nuts are primarily categorized by the number of wings, base plate diameter, and threading size:
A. Two-Wing Anchor Nut (Standard Wing Nut)
Design: Features two symmetrical, large protruding wings.
Base Diameter: Typically 70mm to 100mm.
Application: The industry standard for regular wall and column formwork where space is clear.
B. Three-Wing Anchor Nut
Design: Features three equally spaced wings.
Application: Provides more striking angles for the hammer in tight, confined corners or complex structural junctions.
C. Combo Anchor Nut (Anchor Nut with Swivel Base)
Design: A heavy-duty wing nut permanently attached to a large, loose-spinning washer base (110mm to 130mm).
Application: Used on angled or sloping formwork (like inclined retaining walls or bridge piers) because the swivel base adapts to uneven surfaces.
Site Installation Protocol
To ensure structural safety, anchor nuts must be installed symmetrically to balance the immense lateral loads.
Indian Testing Standards (IS) & Quality Control
Because an anchor nut failure can cause a catastrophic site accident, Surya Engineering manufactures these components under strict safety guidelines aligned with Indian Standards:
IS 1367 (Part 3): Standardizes the mechanical properties of fasteners, governing proof load capacities and structural tensile limits.
IS 2108 / IS 14329: Governs the quality of Blackheart Malleable Iron and Spheroidal Graphite (SG) Iron castings, ensuring the wings are ductile enough to absorb heavy hammer impacts without snapping.
Load Testing Protocol: Sample batches are subjected to a Proof Load Test on a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), where they must easily withstand axial tensile loads of 90 kN to 180 kN (approx. 9 to 18 metric tons) without stripping the internal threads.
Major Advantages
Extremely Safe Castings: Forged from high-grade SG iron, meaning the wings will bend rather than unexpectedly shatter when struck hard.
Rapid Cycle Times: The coarse tie-rod thread pattern cuts down assembly and disassembly time to mere seconds per tie point.
No Specialized Tools: Eliminates the need for expensive spanners, impact wrenches, or electricity; a basic site hammer is all that is required.
