1. What is a Mivan Wedge?
A Mivan Wedge is a heavy-duty, flat steel plate featuring a precisely engineered tapered profile. It is designed to slide directly into the slot of a Mivan Stub Pin or Wall Tie. Because its thickness increases gradually from the tip to the base, driving it forward converts a simple hammer strike into a massive linear tightening force.
2. Why is it Used?
Aluminum formwork panels must be joined with zero gap to prevent slurry leakage, which causes structural honeycombing (voids in concrete).
The Mivan Wedge is used to:
Generate High Clamping Force: It pulls adjacent aluminum panel side rails tightly against each other.
Prevent Form Deflection: It secures the pins so tightly that panels cannot shift or wobble during high-frequency concrete vibration.
Enable Ultra-Fast Assembly: It completely eliminates the need for complex nut-and-bolt systems or specialized torque wrenches.
3. Classifications & Technical Specifications :
Mivan Wedges are classified primarily by their thickness, manufacturing method, and structural design:
A. Standard Straight Wedge
Design: A uniform, straight-tapered flat blade.
Thickness: Generally ranges from $5\text{ mm}$ to $8\text{ mm}$ depending on system specifications.
Application: Used for standard panel-to-panel connections along straight walls, columns, and slab decks.
B. Curved / Offset Wedge
Design: Features a distinct anatomical curve or bend near the striking head.
Application: Designed specifically for tight corners, internal wall intersections, and spatial constraints where a straight hammer blow is obstructed by the formwork geometry.
Manufacturing Classifications
Hot-Stamped / Forged Wedges: Forged from high-grade carbon steel. These offer exceptional molecular density and maximum reusability.
Laser-Cut Sheet Metal Wedges: Cut directly from structural-grade steel plates. Highly economical, offering excellent dimensional consistency.
4. Site Installation Protocol :
The safety and speed of a Mivan monolithic pour depend on how cleanly the pins and wedges are driven home.
5. Indian Testing Standards (IS) & Quality Control :
Mivan wedges operate under continuous impact fatigue and high tensile loads. Surya Engineering ensures manufacturing compliance through recognized Indian structural standards:
IS 2062 (Grade E250 / E350): Governs the quality of the raw structural steel plates used, ensuring the wedges have high yield strength and won't crack under repeated hammer blows.
IS 1367: Standardizes the hardness thresholds and structural integrity of fastening accessories.
Hardness & Impact Testing: Sample batches undergo Rockwell Hardness Testing (HRC) to guarantee that the striking head does not deform or "mushroom" after multiple cycles of hammer impact.
6. Major Advantages :
Zero Tooling Overhead: No power tools, spanners, or specialized labor required; just a standard hammer.
Monolithic Finish: By closing all micro-gaps between panels, it prevents cement slurry from escaping, resulting in a mirror-smooth concrete surface.
Incredible Speed: Reduces assembly and disassembly times by up to 70% compared to traditional scaffolding and timber setups.
