Polythene Tubing – A Reliable Solution for Construction, Industrial & Infrastructure Applications

What is Polythene Tubing?

Polythene Tubing is a flexible hollow tube manufactured from polyethylene plastic material. It is available in different diameters, thicknesses, colors, and lengths depending on the application requirement.

The tubing offers excellent flexibility, moisture resistance, chemical resistance, and durability, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial and construction uses.

In construction projects, polythene tubing is commonly used as a protective sleeve for dowel bars, anchor bars, cables, pipes, and expansion joint systems.

2. Why is it Used?

When concrete cures, it forms an incredibly strong chemical and physical bond with steel. Without a protective barrier:

  • Hardware Binding: High-tensile tie rods and wall ties would become permanently embedded inside the concrete wall.

  • Destructive Stripping: Forcing bounded rods out damages the freshly cast concrete face and destroys expensive reusable hardware.

The Polythene Tube creates a friction-free isolation barrier. The concrete cures around the outer plastic wall, leaving the internal steel tie completely free to be slipped out smoothly during demoulding.

Classifications & Technical Specifications :

Polythene Tubing is categorized by raw material density, internal diameter, and wall thickness:

A. Material Composition

  • LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene): Highly flexible, crack-resistant under pressure, and easy to cut cleanly on-site using a basic utility knife. This is the industry standard for tie-rod protection.

  • HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): Rigid, has higher compressive strength, and is preferred for heavy civil infrastructure projects (bridges, dams, metro retaining walls) using thick tie rods.

B. Standard Dimensional Profiling

  • Internal Diameter (ID): Standard sizes match common tie rod diameters: 16mm, 20mm, 22mm, and 25mm

  • Wall Thickness: Ranges from 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm. A thicker wall prevents the tube from collapsing or wrinkling under the immense weight of wet concrete.

Installation Process of Polythene Tubing :

Proper installation ensures maximum efficiency and durability.

Step 1: Select Correct Tubing Size

Choose the appropriate diameter and thickness according to project requirements.

Step 2: Surface Preparation

Ensure the component or area is clean and free from debris.

Step 3: Position the Tubing

Place the tubing over the required component or within the installation area.

Step 4: Secure the Tubing

Fix using clamps, ties, or other fastening methods if required.

Step 5: Inspect Alignment

Check proper positioning and movement allowance.

Step 6: Final Inspection

Verify installation quality before project completion.
